NATIONAL HISPANIC RECOGNITION GOES TO LOCAL PCS STUDENTS:


Three members of the senior class at Pacific Collegiate School, Alexandra Hamb of Scotts Valley, David Orozco and Marshall A. Rogers of Santa Cruz, have been recognized by the College Board’s National Hispanic Recognition Program, as announced by Principal Andrew Goldenkranz.

Hamb, Orozco and Rogers entered the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) as high school juniors and by identifying themselves as Hispanic. This year, more than 196,000 PSAT/NMSQT takers nationwide identified themselves as Hispanic, and more than 4,000 of those students have been recognized as National Hispanic Scholars or Honorable Mention Finalists based upon their PSAT/NMSQT scores and their academic achievements

Hamb, Orozco and Rogers have attended PCS since the 7th grade.
Alexandra Hamb, in addition to this award, received the AP Scholar with Distinction Award which recognizes exemplary college-level achievement on Advanced Placement Program Examinations. Hamb is currently the President of PCS’ Student Government and serves on the PCS Board of Directors as the Student Representative. She is also involved in Junior Statesman of America, Dance, Youth Together against AIDS Awareness-a student run club that has pen pals in Uganda and funds their AIDS awareness classes and programs. She volunteers as an apprentice guide at the Seymour Center at Long Marine Lab.

David Orozco has taken many AP classes, including five AP classes in 11th grade. He has received two awards from the National Latin Exam, Summa Cum Laude and Cum Laude. He has directed two dramatic shows and will be directing the fall Drama 3 performance. He also has served as a light technician. His extra-curricular activities include: gaming, rocketry, and hockey and soccer clubs. For Community service, he was an assistant soccer coach and helped students at a Watsonville elementary school begin to learn English.

Marshall Rogers completed four AP classes in his junior year. He has participated in internships at UCSC and Duke University in the physics department. He is a Boy Scout and a candidate for Eagle Scout. Later this month he will attend an introduction to Columbia University’s engineering program. For his community service, he has been working at La Posada Nursing home.

PCS Ranked number 2 among the top 100 high schools in the nation

Pacific Collegiate Charter School in Santa Cruz will be listed in U.S. News World Report's first annual ranking of America's Best High Schools. PCS has been ranked number 2 among the top 100 high schools in the nation.

The magazine will publish the results in the latest edition of the magazine, available online: www.usnews.com/highschools on Friday, November 30th and on newsstands beginning Monday, December 3.
